In the quarter final the 6th seed Sean DOHERTY presently training in France beat the 6 times champion Gavin RUMGAY(1) in a tight 4 set match. Sean went on to beat Niall CAMERON(4) in the semi-final after being 2 sets to love down. Craig HOWIESON (2) got to the final without dropping a set. In an exciting final Sean won the first 2 sets putting Craig under severe pressure. Craig won set 3 playing more aggressively. Sean had set points in the fourth set but Craig pulled out some great attacking shots to win by 12/10 and then won the next 2 sets and the match. Craig said afterwards that “it feels fantastic to win the title at last after having lost the last 3 in the final”. Craig also won the men’s doubles with Stewart CRAWFORD beating Gavin and Niall in another close match by 3/2. In the ladies event a much improved Lynda FLAWS (Shetland) upset the number 2 seed Gillian EDWARDS 3/0 in the semi-final while Natasha MILLIKEN beat the number 1 seed Corrina WHITAKER in a close 5 set match. Egle SADIKOVIC is the new titleholder in women’s singles. She won 4-1 against Tessy GONDERINGER in the final for her first ever national championships title. Sarah de NUTTE and Simone HAAN won bronze. Traian CIOCIU and Mike BAST won the Men’s Doubles title. They overcame Jerome RAISON and Fabien SIMON in the final. Sven HANSEN and Laurent KINTZELE as well as Arlindo DE SOUSA and Fabio SANTOMAURO clinched bronze. Sarah de NUTTE and Tessy GONDERINGER were the best in Women’s Doubles. In the final they succeeded against Vinita SCHLINK and Annick STAMMET. Jill BERNS and Danielle KONSBRUCK and Simone HAAN and Carole HARTMANN were stopped at the penultimate hurdle. The winners of the mixed doubles are Fabien SIMON and Sarah de NUTTE. They overcame Mike BAST and Simone HAAN in the final. Naomi beat Charlotte CAREY 3-1 (10 9 -9 5) in the final before that she beat Angharad PHILLIPS in the semi.
