Slovenia’s Darko JORGIĆ silver medalist from the 2022 European Championships in Munich will be in action at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz from October 15th to 20th. The three-time Europe Top-16 Cup winner is seeded among the top players in Austria. “After the Olympic Games in Paris I didn’t have a break. I went straight to Lima because I needed to maintain my ranking and secure my spot among the top 16 players for the Grand Finals. I played well there and won the title in Peru which helped me stay ranked 15th. Of course the Bundesliga season started so I didn’t miss the action there either. Afterward I competed in the Champions in Macao and Smash in Beijing. In terms of my form and game I’m happy with my current level. I’ve had many good matches in the last few months ” said JORGIĆ who reached the Round of 16 in both Paris Olympics and in SMASH in Beijing. Looking ahead to the LIEBHERR European Championships JORGIĆ shared his optimism: “I’m looking toward Linz with a big dose of optimism. In the past few weeks I’ve lost a few matches that I shouldn’t have but the European Championships is different. The style the players—it’s all different in Europe. I’m ready and honestly I can’t wait for the tournament to start. I guess I’m curious too about how far I can go.” With so many matches and constant traveling JORGIĆ was asked if he had time to train with the national team. “I trained with the German national team in Düsseldorf. The training and players there were phenomenal. You can’t get better conditions or sparring partners than that. It gives me confidence and now I just hope I can carry that good play and confidence into Linz.” JORGIĆ lost to Dang QIU in the final two years ago in Munich but his goal for Linz is clear: “In general my goal is to defend my silver. But I see what’s coming—the competition is fierce with so many top players in excellent shape right now. I’ll give my best but my primary goal is to reach the top eight and from there anything can happen.” When asked for his prediction of the medal contenders Jorgić said “It’s very difficult to say who will be in the top four at the end. The biggest favorites for the medals are all the players from Sweden Germany and France. The competition is fierce.” JORGIĆ’S defining career moment came at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where he delivered a series of stunning performances. He first defeated England’s Liam PITCHFORD in a closely fought round of 32 match. In the round of 16 JORGIĆ pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament defeating Japan’s Tomokazu HARIMOTO the hometown favorite to reach the quarterfinals marking his best Olympic performance to date. JORGIĆ has also been a dominant force on the European circuit. He won the Europe Top-16 Championships in 2022 2023 and 2024 defeating top competitors like Sweden’s Truls MÖREGÅRDH and Germany’s Dang QIU. Additionally he secured a silver medal at the 2022 European Championships in Munich and bronze in the 2017 European Team Championships. Off the European stage Jorgić has also excelled at the Mediterranean Games winning both the singles and team events in 2018 followed by another team gold medal in 2022.
SZOCS: I hope it would be third time lucky for me
Bernadette Cynthia SZOCS a Romanian table tennis star continues to carve her name into the sport’s history with an impressive career spanning over a decade. Born in 1995 in Târgu Mureș Romania SzOcs has risen to become one of the most formidable players on both the European and global stage. At the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz from October 15th to 20th SZOCS is no. one seed in the singles event. She narrowly missed a medal in Munich two years ago losing to Sofia POLCANOVA the eventual winner in the quarterfinals. However the two later teamed up to win the doubles championship together. In mixed doubles Bernadette reached the second position alongside Ovidiu IONESCU. In Paris SZOCS advanced to the round of 16 at the Olympic Games. Reflecting on her busy schedule she explained: “I didn’t have any break after the Olympics in Paris. Just a few days and then I left for UTT.” SzOcs is a member of the Ahmedabad SG Pipers in India’s Ultimate TT League. “I think it was the best choice I could make for my mental health after the Olympics.” Now SZOCS is focused on the upcoming LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz. When asked about her preparations she shared: “Yes we had a training camp in Romania. The boys and girls worked together.” Regarding her goals for Linz SZOCS said “I will take it step by step match by match. I don’t want to think too far ahead because it’s a long journey. Of course I would like to defend my doubles title and at least maintain my second-place finish in mixed doubles. But playing in all three events won’t be easy so I need to stay focused. I don’t want to put any more pressure on myself as it won’t help.” SZOCS has faced POLCANOVA in key moments such as the final of the European Championships in Munich and the Round of 16 at the Olympics. “Yes I played against my doubles partner Sofia in two important tournaments. It’s not easy to play against her but every match is different and I hope the third time will be lucky for me.” When asked about other medal contenders in Linz SZOCS noted “All the players will be tough and it won’t be easy at all. But my goal is to enjoy the game play with pleasure and take each match step by step.” A highlight of SZOCS’ career came in 2017 when she won gold in the team event at the European Championships showing her resilience and ability to perform under pressure. In 2018 she captured the prestigious Europe Top-16 title defeating LI Jie of the Netherlands 4-1. The pinnacle of her career so far came in 2023 when SZOCS won the gold medal in singles at the European Games in Kraków Poland. She also played a vital role in helping Romania secure gold in the team event. SZOCS’ reached a career-high ranking of 8th in the world in April 2024.
FRANZISKA: I’m Ready to Attack in Singles and Mixed at the European Championships
Patrick FRANZISKA’S best finish in the singles at the European Championships was third place in 2018 but he has already proven he can win big titles having claimed the Europe Top 16 Cup crown in 2021. Now he returns to action at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz from October 15th to 20th as part of a strong 14-member German squad. Is the time ripe for a European title this time? “That’s hard to say. We play so many tournaments that you have to first see what form you’re in when you arrive. Of course I want to go far – that has to be my ambition. There are probably more players in Linz who can become European champions than ever before. I’m taking it one round at a time. But I definitely want to compete hard in both singles and mixed this time. Let’s see how it goes with Annett (Kaufmann). We’re playing together for the first time and need to fight through the qualifiers. My goals for this European Championship are ambitious ” said FRANZISKA. Looking at the World rankings 2024 has been your best year so far. Strong results including second place at the Grand Smash in Saudi Arabia have pushed you to ninth place. What has defined Patrick FRANZISKA in 2024? “It has been my best year but also emotionally the most difficult one I can remember in my career. Sometimes I’ve surprised myself with how well I’ve played. A lot of factors come together. I’ve learned to better block out distractions during competitions. I’ve also kept working on my backhand which is now very reliable. Staying injury-free and avoiding interruptions I couldn’t control have also helped. I think these factors are key to my success. I’m definitely very proud to have broken into the top ten this year.” At the Olympic Games Dimitrij OVTCHAROV narrowly lost to France’s superstar Felix Lebrun. Your form was good at the China Smash but you were sidelined by an infection. How fit are you as you head to the European Championships? “I’ve been in good form for several months now. At the Olympics I only narrowly lost to Felix Lebrun and Truls MÖREGARDH two of the dominant players in the tournament. I could have won both matches. In the Bundesliga I started the season 9-0 and at the China Smash after a solid performance against Zhou QIHAO I just ran out of steam at the end partly due to an infection. Overall my table tennis is in great shape at the moment.” You were European champion in 2013 and 2015 reached the final in 2020 and are once again one of the main contenders. How do you rate your chances of winning a third title? “I’m looking forward to the European Championships. Winning a third title after my two successes in singles would be something very special. There are many players aiming for the title – Felix and Alexis LEBRUN my national teammates Dang and Patrick (FRANZISKA) Darko JORGIC and some Swedes. I consider myself one of the favorites. But besides Dang and me no one else has won the title. So I’m just trying to carry my good form into the tournament and enjoy it. Winning again would be great but I don’t feel the pressure in Linz. I’ll leave that to the others.”
Alexis LEBRUN: Ready to Fight
Three-time French national champion Alexis LEBRUN (born August 27 2003) is coming to Linz as seed no. 6 at the forthcoming LIEBHERR European Championships (October 15th to 20th). In 2022 Alexis defeated Simon GAUZY to become the national singles champion of France. In March 2023 he retained his French national championship title by defeating his younger brother Félix in the final. In the same year Alexis achieved a major breakthrough by defeating then-world no. 1 FAN Zhendong in five games during the quarterfinals of the Macao tournament. Ranked 1050 in the world in January 2022 Alexis advanced rapidly to become world no. 19 by April 2023 at just nineteen years old. At the 2023 European Games Alexis won the bronze medal in the men’s singles event while his younger brother Félix claimed the gold. Later in February 2024 Alexis as part of the French men’s national team competed in the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Busan South Korea alongside Félix LEBRUN Simon GAUZY Jules ROLLAND and Lilian BARDET. Team France won the silver medal losing in the final to Team China (3-0). This marked the first time in 27 years that the French men’s national team medaled at the World Team Table Tennis Championships—the last being a silver in 1997. Team France had another fantastic result at the 2024 Paris Olympics where they reached the medal podium. Can you describe your emotions playing at the Olympics and winning a medal? “It was just unbelievable… playing my first Olympics at home and winning a medal. I experienced extraordinary emotions which we were able to share with the whole team. It was a fantastic moment.” What is your strongest memory from Paris 2024? “The celebration at the France club without hesitation. Seeing the fervor of the French supporters and being able to share everything we experienced with them was crazy.” After a busy media week following the Paris Olympics Alexis and Félix spent their break together with family and friends in Barcelona. What are your thoughts on the upcoming LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz? “I feel good at the moment. I think we have a really strong doubles team with Félix and in singles I feel my level is increasing. I’m coming with the ambition of going for a title or medals.” If you were to make a prediction who do you think will make it to the medal podium at Linz? “It’s hard to say there are a lot of players in good form and very strong. So I’ll say Simon Félix and me ” Alexis said laughing. Who do you believe are the most in-form players in Europe right now? “It’s also very difficult to say as there haven’t been many tournaments since the Olympic Games. With their results Truls [Möregårdh] and Félix seem to be in good shape but I think many other players are as well. It’s going to be a great battle.” How would you describe your current physical condition? “Ready to fight!”
