Alvaro ROBLES and Maria XIAO clinched the gold medal in the Mixed Doubles event at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz. In the final they overcame Robert GARDOS and Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria. Bronze medalists are Simon GAUZY and Prithika PAVADE of France as well as Patrick FRANZISKA and Annett KAUFMANN of Germany. In the final ROBLES and XIAO dominated. “We played at an amazing level in both the final and the semifinal earlier today. It is normal that you have to play at the top level if you want to win a title at the European Championships but with this performance we even amazed ourselves. We were fantastic ” said Alvaro. Maria added: “In the important moments we were at the top of our game and managed the crucial moments superbly.” Alvaro and Maria started playing together before COVID and this is their first major title in mixed doubles. “We won titles in one WTT Feeder and Contender but this one is special ” said Alvaro. “This one will stay with us forever ” added Maria. This is the second title ever at the European Championships for Spain and the first with two Spanish players. SHEN Yanfei won the Women’s Doubles in 2015 with HU Melek (TUR). Robert GARDOS is the oldest European champion ever at the age of 45. The previous record for a finalist was held by Xia Lian NI of Luxembourg who reached the ultimate stage at the age of 44 while the oldest winner is LI Jiao of the Netherlands who won at the age of 38. Sofia POLCANOVA: “It was a very long day; I played four matches and won three. The Spanish team were better congratulations. We didn’t play badly but it wasn’t enough. Considering how we started—we almost got knocked out in the first round—we can be absolutely happy with silver.” Robert GARDOS: “It was a tough and long tournament; we kept improving and played at one of our best levels. Unfortunately it didn’t work out in the final. It was just little things but that’s the way it is. Of course it would have been nice to win but it’s not a request show.” Bronze medalists from Munich 2022 Robert GARDOS and Sofia POLCANOVA kept the audience in TipsArena on the edge of their seats in a thrilling five-game semifinal match against Patrick FRANZISKA and Annett KAUFMANN. Both pairings had four match balls in the nail-biting finish of the fifth game but it was Austria’s duo who converted it into victory with a huge roar from the stands. “It was an incredible match; we both played very well and gave everything over five sets. They really challenged us and we can be very proud. It might have even been our best game. It was fantastic ” said GARDOS. Alvaro ROBLES and Maria XIAO overcame Simon GAUZY and Prithika PAVADE in four games. “I don’t know what makes us happier—the fact that we reached the final or that we just beat such strong adversaries. We produced the game at the highest level ” explained Alvaro. Maria added: “The last game was very close but we played bravely and were very precise. I really did not expect such a good outcome.” Final Alvaro ROBLES Maria XIAO (Spain) – Robert GARDOS Sofia POLCANOVA (Austria) 3-0 (11-8 11-9 12-10) Semi final Robert GARDOS Sofia POLCANOVA (Austria) – Patrick FRANZISKA Annett KAUFMANN (Germany) 3-2 (11-8 10-12 12-14 11-9 16-14) Simon GAUZY Prithika PAVADE (France) – Alvaro ROBLES Maria XIAO (Spain) 1-3 (8-11 5-11 11-9 9-11)
SZOCS Shines in the Round of 32 at the LIEBHERR European Championships
The start of the Round of 32 in the Women’s Singles Event at the LIEBHERR European Championships delivered thrilling duels. Izabela LUPULESKU of Serbia overcame her teammate Aneta MAKSUTI in a seven-game thriller. “It was so hard and awkward. I’m not used to playing for a relatively high position at a major championship against my teammate. It felt strange to fight and without fighting I couldn’t lift my game. In addition MAKSUTI constantly received warnings for her service which made me feel uneasy ” explained LUPULESKU. Afterward she was caught in a whirl of emotions realizing what had just happened. “I’m into the Round of 16 in singles playing for a medal in doubles tomorrow and I reached the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles. All of this after the misery I went through these past few weeks. I got injured in China dislocating my kneecap. Then I got a heavy virus with all kinds of stomach problems. All in all I had only a few training sessions. It affected my confidence—I came here feeling insecure and jittery thinking I’d be going home quickly. Then I beat Lea RAKOVAC who had a great record against me and Aneta who beat me two years ago. I think the Olympics makes all the difference. Despite the difficulties my game has blossomed thanks to the magic of the Games ” added LUPULESKU. Bernadette SZOCS of Romania secured her spot in the Round of 16 after a powerful win over Annett KUFMANN of Germany. “I am very happy with my performance but I have to say that I prepared very well for this match. Annett is among the top players and I didn’t leave anything to chance. From the very first ball until match point I stayed focused and determined. I used a lot of variation in my game. I am proud of my tactics. I am one step closer to a medal but there’s still a long way to go. When I came here I forced myself to avoid any pressure and to play more freely. So far it has worked perfectly ” said SZOCS. Sofia POLCANOVA faced a trouble-free path to the Round of 16 with a 4-0 win over Veronika MATUNINA of Ukraine. “I was a bit unfocused at the beginning; these are long intense days and you can feel it. I have to push myself hard and I have to let my emotions out to stay active. Now I’m going to eat something then hopefully get some sleep although as always I won’t be able to ” said POLCANOVA with a smile. Elizabeta SAMARA of Romania beat Solomiya BRATEYKO of Ukraine in five games. “We played three matches in the past four months. In June in the Polish league it was 3-2 and at the Olympics I beat her 4-3. Knowing her I knew I had to seize any opportunity that occurred. Solomiya’s game is so difficult. Her balls didn’t have spin; she just placed them on the table but with high quality. My coach told me not to rush and to wait for the right moment. Easier said than done. I knew I had to maintain my control and leave her with fewer options ” said SAMARA. In the next round she will meet Sabine WINTER of Germany. “I lost against her in singles at the World Cup and also in the team events in Romania at the European Championships. On the other hand I beat her in Slovenia so I’m sure it’s going to be a good match ” said SAMARA. WINTER beat Franziska SCHREINER in an all-German clash for a place in the round of 16. “The racket is completely wrecked – serves were taken away from me today that had never been taken away in my entire life. Then I was left with only one serve option which made the game against Franzi difficult since she knows my serve from training and I had even fewer variations. I think I handled the situation well and turned my emotions into a fight. It was a nervous start for both of us; the level improved somewhat but in the end the game wasn’t fun it was pure battle. But one of my strengths is to fight and that helped. I need to calm down a bit take it easy and try to enjoy the game tomorrow ” said WINTER. After a shaky start Nina MITTELHAM of Germany managed to beat Gaia MONFARDINI of Italy 4:3. “It was a day full of battles today. I didn’t start well but Gaia played very well in the beginning. I knew she’s not my favorite opponent; I’ve known her for a long time. But in the end she also got a bit nervous and I’m glad I won the match. I still make a lot of easy mistakes and I’m just missing the plan for how to continue after my own serve. I also didn’t have confidence in my long serve but I just tried every ball and in the end I pulled off the match. I’ve played against Fu Yu many times before and won every time recently. I like playing against her because I enjoy her rhythm ” said MITTELHAM. Christina KALLBERG of Sweden overcame Anna HURSEY of Wales in straight games. “It was more than good evening. I give myself a high rating. I followed the tactics throughout the match and didn’t make it harder than it needed to be. What I won on was stability. My service was as it should be and I got some easy points there. There weren’t many rallies.” In next round KALLBERG will meet POLCANOVA. “I’ve lived in Linz just like her. We’ve trained together a bit before. I know her somewhat at least. It’s definitely a tough match and I’m not the favorite but I believe in myself.” Linda BERGSTRÖM prevailed against Ivana MALOBABIC of Croatia. “It’s really fun to still be in both events. We’ll start the day tomorrow with a
ROBLES Shine in Dramatic Round of 32 at LIEBHERR European Championships
In the Round of 32 in the Men’s Singles Event at the LIEBHERR European Championships top-seeded Felix LEBRUN of France easily prevailed against Mathias FALCK of Sweden in straight games. When asked to comment after the match Felix was honest: “I do not know what I could say much about the tactics I am just happy that I won. Everything went smoothly and fast and it gives me great confidence for the future. I played my game being fast during the points and in between the points.” Alvaro ROBLES of Spain pulled off a fantastic recovery to beat Ivor BAN of Croatia in a duel where he was down 0-3. When asked what had happened he replied with a laugh: “I’d like to know that too! If I had figured it out I might have reacted earlier. It was all about finding my rhythm. It seemed impossible—I just couldn’t control the match. There was no chance to put pressure on him. At that moment I couldn’t find any solution against BAN; he was dominating. After 0-3 I changed something in my positioning and it led to an absolute turnaround. I started to dominate; I was in control…it was completely the opposite of the first three games. In situations like this I usually start the fourth game just to try and if I hit the same wall I’d tell myself it’s just a bad day and tomorrow will be better. But this time it was so close and I fought so hard. Mostly I challenged myself not to give up. Winning battles like this gives an enormous psychological boost ” stated ROBLES. Dimitrij OVTCHAROV also showed that he is in good shape by securing a straight-games victory over Martin ALLEGRO of Belgium. “He took a lot of risks and hit many ralies especially in the first game. But I was very consistent stable and had a solid game plan. It was a comfortable 4-0 win although the third game was a bit on the edge. Now I have plenty of time to prepare for tomorrow. I like taking walks doing some physiotherapy and video analysis ” said OVTCHAROV. After yesterday’s drama in the match against Balasz LEI of Hungary when Darko JORGIC was down 2-3 and 8-10 today he justified his status against Borgar HAUG of Norway recording a 4-1 win. “I am really thrilled that I’m back on the right track. I took the opening game in an express way maybe with a bit of luck then stayed in the same rhythm in the second and third games. However Borgar raised his game and took the fourth set with powerful shots from both forehand and backhand. It triggered a bit of panic as HAUG started to make a difference in the fifth game with 5-7 and 8-10. I could already see the same episode as yesterday but luckily I recovered and sealed the match ” explained JORGIC. The clash between two Swedes Kristian KARLSSON and Anton KALLBERG went in favor of KALLBERG who won the five-game contest. Croatia’s Andrej GACINA beat Anders LIND of Denmark in another seven-game thriller. He was down 0-2 won the next three games then LIND leveled the match but GACINA withstood his recovery to clinch the win in another close finish. “I should have finished the match at 3-2. I had match point at 10-6 but I failed. Mostly I’m the one to blame for that. It gave LIND a chance to return. I saw from his body language that he became relaxed. He had already buried the match but I allowed him to come back. He played without pressure and with his service—which is one of the best at the tournament—it became extremely difficult. I raised my game put on extra pressure to come back. He is so difficult to beat with his specific style ” explained GACINA. Joao GERALDO of Portugal had a dream start against Patrick FRANZISKA but after the first game the German player shifted gears to win the duel 4-1. “I really had to battle with myself. We were quite disappointed after the mixed doubles and my leg took a hit during that match. When I lost the first set I thought it could get tight. But I stayed super focused and played great after that. I’ve lost to him several times before so I had to be really smart. He plays aggressively sometimes even recklessly with incredible athleticism. I’m glad I won those two tight sets at the end and I’ll be happy to lie down and get a massage now. GACINA is very experienced and I haven’t played him in a long time. My whole family is here which is great—it helps me forget losses faster. I’d love to have them at every tournament ” said FRANZISKA. Seeded No. 21 Milosz REDZIMSKI of Poland beat No. 12 seed Simon GAUZY of France in straight games. “It was the first time we played against each other. I’ve always liked how Simon plays. I love the way he feels the ball and the way he has fun. I was very excited when I saw he was in my part of the draw. We played many good rallies today and I tried to attack all the time. I managed to keep the match under control. I’m just doing what I always do moving well around the table and attacking ” explained REDZIMSKI. Tomislav PUCAR of Croatia forced Marcos FREITAS to go the full distance before securing his spot in the Round of 16.
French Teenagers GUO ZENG and HOCHART Shock Favorites in Women’s Doubles in Linz
At just 16 and 14 years old Nina GUO ZENG and Leana HOCHART of France pulled off the biggest upset of the Women’s Doubles Round of 16 at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz. The young French duo eliminated two-time European champions and multiple medalists Elizabeta SAMARA and and Andreea DRAGOMAN of Romania in a thrilling match. “We are much younger and played without pressure. We enjoyed the game. Our advantage was having nothing to lose while all the pressure was on SAMARA and DIACONU. We were brave and didn’t crack especially at the end when it was 2-2 and 10-10. We stuck to our tactics ” explained Nina GUO ZENG. The French duo who won silver at the Under-15 European Championships last year will now face another surprise winner Serbia’s Izabela LUPULESKU and Sabina SURJAN. The Serbian pair triumphed in straight games over Germany’s Yuan WAN and Sabine WINTER a two-time European champion and former runner-up. “I was unusually optimistic before the match. I’ve played against Yuan many times in the Bundesliga and knew we could win. More importantly Izabela and I played for each other creating opportunities together ” said SURJAN. Next up is a showdown with GUO ZENG and HOCHART. “They pulled off an upset but so did we ” said LUPULESKU laughing. “We’re only seeded 12th but here we are playing for a medal. I was sick two weeks ago then had a knee injury so I only had two days of preparation and I focused entirely on doubles. Our friendship is helping us achieve much better results than expected.” In other action Sweden’s Linda BERGSTRÖM and Christina KALLBERG overcame Germany’s Annett KAUFMANN and Nina MITTELHAM the latter a former European doubles silver and gold medalist. However the Swedish pair proved too strong today. KALLBERG said: “It was similar to yesterday’s match where we were leading 2-0 but played a bad third game. Then we were down 8-10 in the fourth and I thought ‘No I don’t want to lose like we did yesterday in the mixed doubles.’ We managed to pull ourselves together and turn it around. I’m really proud of us.” BERGSTROM added: “We were very strong in the aggressive play. Even when we were put in defensive positions we still played forward. We always talk about aggressive defense and how that’s our playing style. Even if Stina has to block. I think Stina was amazing with her forehand always daring to step around. Even if she missed a shot she was ready for the next one.”
KOLODZIEJCZYK and URSU halted the progress of JORGIC and PUCAR
In the Round of 16 of the Men’s Doubles Event at the LIEBHERR European Championships Germany’s Benedikt DUDA and Dang QIU broke the hearts of home supporters by eliminating Austria’s Robert GARDOS and Daniel HABESOHN the European champions from 2012 and 2018 and runners-up in Munich two years ago in straight games. “We played with focus and performed well—sure the first two games were tight at the end but we always had big leads. We had good ideas and managed to close it out smoothly. We both know where our strengths lie and what the other needs even though we haven’t played together for a few months “said DUDA. Austria found some consolation as Maciej KOLODZIEJCZYK and Moldova’s Vladislav URSU defeated Darko JORGIC of Slovenia and Tomislav PUCAR of Croatia in a thrilling five-game match. “We started very well but we knew a response from such top players was inevitable. In the deciding game we adjusted our tactics and played more aggressively. It’s our first time playing together at a senior European Championship and we feel no pressure—just excitement for the quarter-finals ” said KOLODZIEJCZYK. Meanwhile top seeds and French brothers Felix and Alexis LEBRUN safely advanced defeating 2019 World Championship silver medalists Alvaro ROBLES of Spain and Ovidiu IONESCU of Romania in four games.
Top Seeds LEBRUN and MOREGARD Cruise on Opening Day of Men’s Singles at LIEBHERR European Championships
On the opening day of the Men’s Singles main draw at the LIEBHERR European Championships top-seeded Felix LEBRUN of France and No. 2 seed Truls MOREGARD of Sweden easily advanced. LEBRUN defeated Abdullah YIGENLER of Turkey in straight games. “The feeling was very good very good. Two victories so it’s okay. Since the beginning I feel good here. I like the ball the table. I feel the atmosphere is great so I think it will be a great tournament ” said LEBRUN. Next LEBRUN will face Mattias FALCK in Round 2. The Swede overcame Lubomir JANCARIK of Czechia in a tense match. “I thought my returns were really good actually. The last time I faced him at the Team European Championships in Malmö a year ago I lost and had some problems with his serves. Today I was able to control the game a bit better with my backhand. I was also able to vary my short returns more. It was important for me to raise the quality of my play especially in the fourth and fifth games. In the fourth game he started playing much more aggressively. He let me open up a bit and then he really powered through. In the first three games I managed to keep things short and then get into the rallies with my own play which he couldn’t keep up with. The key was good returns and taking control of the game myself.” Looking ahead to the match against LEBRUN FALCK commented: “Tomorrow’s match is of course a tough one. It’s going to be a fun challenge to face Felix LEBRUN. All the pressure is on him. For me it’s about playing relaxed and approaching the match as an underdog. I believe in myself. His playing style suits me quite well. Of course I have to fully believe in myself to win that match. I need to play a really strong backhand. He likes to play backhand and doesn’t back down from that side. If I can stand strong in that exchange I might make him a bit unsure.” When asked if it was a tough draw FALCK said: “Yes but if you look at it the other way I wasn’t thrilled to face Felix so early in the second match but I doubt he’s thrilled to face me in the second match either.” From the qualification rounds Lubomir PISTEJ of Slovakia Adam SZUDI of Hungary and Benedek OLAH of Finland advanced to the Round of 32. No. 5 seed Darko JORGIC of Slovenia almost faced earely exit in the match against Balasz LEI of Hungary. He was forced to sawe two match bals being down 8-10 and 2-3. He won it and in the seventh game at open point he had 8-1 lead. Truls MOREGARD had a great time tonight delighting both spectators and himself with an entertaining performance against Belgium’s Florent LAMBIET. With powerful shots that launched the ball into the stratosphere the Swedish star put on a show. “This is the kind of match I love. I had great fun and everything was perfect ” said MOREGARD. Meanwhile Dimitrij OVTCHAROV of Germany defeated Ioannis SGOUROPOULOS of Greece. “I started really well in the match and the tournament. I also started well in the fourth game but then he hit some amazing shots—he’s just got a great touch on the ball. I’m still processing the Olympics; I still think about the games in Paris. But I’m also still benefiting from my Olympic form even in the TTBL. The European Championships are one of the biggest tournaments and just a few days ago I watched my win against Vladi SAMSONOV in 2013 in Vienna. Good memories and now we’re back in Austria so I hope that’s a good sign.” His teammate Patrick FRANZISKA triumphed over Austria’s Julian RZIHAUSCHEK. “The singles match wasn’t perfect but it was important to stay focused and work my way into the game and the tournament. It was a long day; we’re not really used to playing three matches anymore. It used to be more common in the past. But my body feels good and I’m in a good mood. Now only tough opponents remain and I lost to GERALDO at the 2023 World Championships.”
Top Seeds Safely Through but Day of Upsets at LIEBHERR European Championships
Top seeds in the Women’s Singles Event at the LIEBHERR European Championships Bernadette SZOCS of Romania and Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria successfully concluded the Round of 64. SZOCS prevailed against Maria BERSOZA of Spain in straight games as did POLCANOVA against Charlotte CAREY of Wales. “I may have overestimated my emotional state a little. It’s the first time I’ve played a European Championship at home and probably the last. I’ve been really nervous since Sunday and I’m extremely relieved that we won the mixed quarter-finals today and secured a medal. I’m more of an introverted person who wants to inspire everyone and put a lot of pressure on myself. I know that everyone here is on my side which definitely gives me strength ” explained POLCANOVA. However the opening round of the event was not free from upsets. Qualifier Aneta MAKSUTI of Serbia who lacks ranking points overcame Hana MATELOVA of Czechia ranked no. 40 in the world in a full seven-game thriller. Additionally Leana HOCHART of France ranked no. 199 defeated Britt EERLAND the world no. 40. Natalia BAJOR of Poland world no. 44 suffered a loss to world no. 186 Tin Tin HO of England. Under-21 champion and Under-19 Top 10 winner Veronika MATUNINA beat Ioana SINGEORZAN of Romania while Elizabeta SAMARA of Romania overcame Nina SKERBINZ of Austria. “My match was like always. The first round is difficult and it’s even more challenging when I don’t know the player. She’s younger than me—she’s 14 I’m 35—and she made me work much harder than I expected. But my experience and the many matches I’ve played over the years proved to be an advantage. Still I have to give her credit; she was playing her best table tennis and in front of a home crowd. It was nice but I would have preferred to play on a different table not Table 1. It’s been a long day playing mixed doubles in the morning then doubles and then quick singles—it’s tough. But now I have time to recover ” explained SAMARA. Nina MITTELHAM of Germany defeated Aikaterini TOLIOU of Greece in straight games. “I can’t complain about the draw. Against defensive players I have more time and feel comfortable. I played solidly and am happy to be competing again. I do feel a bit tired but overall I feel good and have no pain. My game still has room for improvement but I’ll aim to get better round by round. In the next round against Sarah de NUTTE I’ll need to stay focused ” said MITTELHAM. Another German player Franziska SCHREINER overcame Hana ARAPOVIC of Croatia but she needed the full seven games. In the next round she will meet teammate Sabine WINTER. “In the end all I had left was to fight and I’m glad I was able to win that tight match. I led 2-0 but I lost focus in the third set and the next few sets went by quickly. I’ve had many close matches with Hana and I gave her the confidence to come back. Sabine is the favorite; she leads in head-to-head matches and is ranked higher on every list. I’m happy to make it to the second round and improve on my result from Munich. Last time I was just two points away ” said SCHREINER. Linda BERGSTRÖM of Sweden overcame Alexandra HIRIACOVA of Moldova to progress to the Round of 32. “It was a good match. The first two games were flawless. My forehand shots were very strong. Then as can happen when things are going a bit too well I became a bit passive in the third set. Still I fought my way back in both the third and fourth sets and won 4-0. It’s nice to feel strong in those 10-10 moments and still manage to win 4-0 ” said BERGSTRÖM. “It’s a very demanding competition but it was nice to have a few hours between the doubles and singles matches. It’s been a long day but I handled it well so I’m satisfied.” Her next opponent is Ivana MALOBABIC of Croatia. “A defensive player. I last played her in January in the Champions League. I won 3-2 then. It was a pretty tough match but during parts of that match I played very well. I feel like my forehand game has been strong today so I hope I can keep up the aggression tomorrow and things should go well. But it’s always a bit tricky to face a defensive player. I’ll need to prepare well ” said BERGSTRÖM.
ETTU President MOURA: A Vision for Growth Innovation and Inclusivity in European Table Tennis
Pedro MOURA has experienced table tennis from every angle moving through all phases of the sport. Starting as a player representing Portugal in several European and World Championships his journey transitioned into coaching and managing ultimately leading him to the presidency of Portugal’s Table Tennis Association in 2012. Over the years MOURA took on increasing responsibility within the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) serving as Vice President and then Acting President before being officially elected as ETTU President in 2024. With a wealth of experience across all levels MOURA now embarks on a new chapter in his distinguished career leading European table tennis into its next era. Congratulations on your election as the ETTU President. Could you start by sharing what inspired your candidacy for the position? “My candidacy for the presidency of the European Table Tennis Union was driven by my deep love for our sport and a strong commitment to building a bright future for European table tennis. This sport has been part of my life since I was 10 years old. I started as a player represented the Portuguese national team in several European and World Championships and eventually finished my playing career at the 1995 WTTC in Tianjin. Ironically I was eliminated by Mr. Zoran Primorac who is here with us today!”President MOURA continued: “From there my journey in table tennis evolved. I coached and managed at Sporting Clube de Portugal’s table tennis department and in 2012 I was elected president of the Portuguese Table Tennis Association. Under my leadership Portugal organized nearly all major ETTU and ITTF events except for the World Championships. President MOURA had a long history with table tennis not only as a player but also as an administrator. Could you share a bit more about your leadership roles before becoming President? “Yes in 2016 I was elected as ETTU Vice President and in 2020 I was chosen as ETTU Deputy President. Things took an unexpected turn in March 2022 when I became Acting President after the unfortunate situation that led to Igor LEVITIN’s self-suspension of his mandate followed by Vladimir SAMSONOV and Polina MIKHAILOVA stepping down from their roles. ETTU was left in a very challenging political situation. It wasn’t easy but in August 2022 during the Congress in Munich we decided to start focusing on the future of ETTU. I worked with the Executive Board to draft a Strategic Plan and an Implementation Plan so all member associations could follow our work. Additionally we made the decision to reinvest the financial results from 2021 and 2022 back into the sport while also increasing ETTU’s reserves preparing for any future crises whether it’s another pandemic or unfortunately even a war. You’ve spoken about your vision for European table tennis. What are the key pillars of your presidency? “My candidacy is centered on three key pillars: growth innovation and inclusivity. Growth is not only about expanding our competitions but also improving the quality and visibility of the sport. We’ve already made significant progress with TV production quality and broader broadcast deals. For example at the European Team Championships in Malmo we had more than 20 countries broadcasting the event. Here in Linz we have contracts in place for close to 50 countries spanning from China to the USA. But I believe we can go even further especially by modernizing competition formats like we did with the Men’s Champions League Final 4.” Innovation seems to be another key focus of yours. How do you plan to integrate it further into ETTU’s operations? “Innovation is essential. Our partnerships with companies like Sportradar and Stupa Sports Analytics have allowed us to integrate cutting-edge technology into ETTU’s operations. This is only the beginning. I want to continue pushing these boundaries by expanding our digital presence enhancing live broadcasts and utilizing real-time data and analytics to engage with fans players and stakeholders more effectively.” You’ve also placed significant emphasis on inclusivity. How do you plan to promote diversity in table tennis? “Inclusivity is crucial to our vision. Table tennis must be a sport where everyone feels welcome regardless of age gender or background. I’m committed to promoting diversity at all levels of the game. This includes supporting youth programs creating opportunities for the next generation of champions and ensuring greater representation of women and underrepresented groups in leadership coaching and on the playing field.” Strong governance and financial stability were also points you highlighted. How do you plan to maintain that? “Strong governance is fundamental to supporting growth innovation and inclusivity. Transparency integrity and accountability are core principles that will guide my leadership. We’ve already built a solid foundation with our Strategic Plan and I pledge to continue ensuring that the ETTU operates with these values maintaining regular communication with all member associations. We want to remain aligned with their needs and aspirations.” You’ve mentioned the importance of maintaining close relations with the ITTF. How do you see the future of that relationship? “Our relationship with the ITTF is essential for the future of table tennis. We will continue cooperating with the International Federation while protecting the interests of European table tennis. This is crucial as we demonstrated recently in the case of the Olympic Games seeding. I believe we can achieve a balance—working closely with the ITTF without losing our autonomy.” Finally what message do you have for the member associations and the European table tennis community? “I will remain a responsive and approachable leader. I’m committed to listening to your concerns and representing your interests. You the members of the European Table Tennis Union are the lifeblood of our sport. Together we can continue growing and evolving European table tennis for generations to come.”
Pedro MOURA Elected as ETTU President at the 2024 Congress in Linz
Pedro MOURA has been elected as the ETTU President for a four-year term during the 2024 ETTU Congress held at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz. For the first time in 40 years the ETTU Presidential election was contested by more than one candidate with both MOURA and Hungarian Table Tennis Association President Imre KOVACSICS addressing the delegates before the voting process. In the election MOURA secured 35 votes defeating KOVACSICS who received 19 votes. In addition to the presidential election the Congress confirmed Heike AHLERT of Germany as the ETTU Deputy President and Sandra DEATON of England as Vice President for finances. The elected ETTU Vice Presidents are Zoran PRIMORAC of Croatia (46 votes) Didier LEROY of Belgium (42) Ina JOZEPSONE of Latvia (41) Jaroslaw Franciszek KOLODZIEJCZYK of Austria (31) and Sonja GREFBERG of Finland (29). “I stand before you with deep gratitude and immense pride humbled by the trust you have placed in me. It is an honor to accept the responsibility of serving as President of the European Table Tennis Union and I pledge to continue dedicating myself to this position ” said MOURA. “First let me express my heartfelt thanks to all the member associations who have supported me throughout my journey as Acting President over the past two years. The progress we have made together is a testament to the power of collaboration unity and shared vision. This is not an achievement of one individual but a collective victory for all who are passionate about our sport.” Reflecting on the newly elected Executive Board MOURA added “To the new team I am absolutely sure your passion for this game your expertise and your commitment to ETTU will make us even stronger. I hope we can all work as a team with ‘Table Tennis First’ always in mind. Also to all candidates not elected your contribution will be fundamental for the development and growth of ETTU. I look forward to continuing this journey with all of you working together to enhance our competitions grow our sport at the grassroots level and foster even greater cooperation across our member associations.” MOURA also highlighted an upcoming significant event: “In May there will be an election for the ITTF presidency and its respective executive board. I must take this moment to acknowledge the current president Mrs. Petra SÖRLING. Her leadership and commitment to the sport have been exemplary and her election to the IOC was well deserved. It is crucial for table tennis to remain part of the Olympic movement and have a voice within the International Olympic Committee.” At the start of the meeting Austria’s TT Federation President Wolfgang GOTSCHKE welcomed the guests stating “For the past 18 months we have worked hard to create the best setup for the Championships. I want to thank all the partners and volunteers for their great effort.” ITTF President Petra SÖRLING also addressed the Congress saying “When I spoke at the Assembly in Busan I said that table tennis in the world has momentum. After Paris we can see that European table tennis has momentum as well. Everyone who attended the Olympics and Paralympics this summer felt it as did the people watching at home. It was great to see such a big event in Europe and it’s important to keep that momentum going.” The delegates voted in favor of a proposal regarding the Europe Top 16 Cup. The new rules state that the following players will be invited: the current European Champion the winner of the previous Europe Top 16 Cup and the top 19 (instead of 13) players from the latest European Rankings excluding the European Champion and the previous Top 16 Cup winner. Additionally the rule limiting participation to two players from each association has been abolished and all matches will now be the best of five games instead of seven. First Medalists Determined at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz
On the third day of play at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz we now know the first medal winners. The Mixed Doubles event has reached the penultimate phase with Simon GAUZY and Prithika PAVADE of France Alvaro ROBLES and Maria XIAO of Spain Robert GARDOS and Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria and Patrick FRANZISKA and Annett KAUFMANN of Germany securing their places in the semifinals and a spot on the medal podium. The TipsArena in Linz erupted today when POLCANOVA and GARDOS reached the mixed doubles semifinals. The Austrian pair played brilliantly against the Serbian duo Dimitrije LEVAJAC and Izabela LUPULESKU winning the match convincingly 3-0. This guarantees them another European Championship medal with the color to be decided on Friday. On the afternoon they will face Germany’s Annett KAUFMANN and Patrick FRANZISKA for a place in the final. Robert GARDOS: “It was a massive effort; we’ve had to stay mentally strong for the last two days. The schedule is extremely tight but we’ve handled it superbly. Our semifinal opponents FRANZISKA and KAUFMANN are very good; I think the chances are 50/50.” Sofia POLCANOVA: “I think I played better than yesterday. I was really nervous during our first match in the morning but managed to control it well. Physically I feel fine. Competing in a European Championship is always different especially with four matches in one day. A lot of it comes down to mental strength so you have to stay tough.” Germany’s duo FRANZISKA and KAUFMANN prevailed in the Round of 16 against second seeds Ovidiu IONESCU and Bernadette SZOCS of Romania runners-up in Munich two years ago. Patrick FRANZISKA: “Winning the first game after trailing 5-9 was crucial. I noticed they were becoming frustrated and rushed. The fourth set was by far the best we’ve played together so far. Annett’s powerful backhand is really impressive. I didn’t expect us to win by such a big margin. Now we’re focused on winning a medal against Hursey and Pitchford. I’ve already faced Pitchford in a medal match in Durban during doubles with Dima.” Annett KAUFMANN: “At the beginning I couldn’t quite find my rhythm but it improved as the match went on and I felt better than yesterday. Now I have a doubles match with Nina and then it’s onto the quarterfinals.” In the quarterfinal they defeated Liam PITCHFORD and Anna HURSEY. Annett KAUFMANN: “The match went well for us; we were fully focused from the start and played with good tactics. We definitely stole the third set. POLCANOVA and GARDOS are strong but so are we. It’s a left-right combination which will make it a different type of game but first they have to beat us.” Patrick FRANZISKA: “It was a rollercoaster match and unlike this morning we didn’t feel like we were in control. Still it was important that we closed out the first game. We stole the third game but at 1-7 Annett said we could still take it. We played more aggressively and some key shots like Annett’s incredible banana shot at 3-9 made a big difference. Playing such a strong mixed doubles match again isn’t something we take for granted. We aimed for a medal but didn’t expect it. From the start we knew we had good chemistry. I also have unfinished business with Sofia POLCANOVA from the 2018 European Championships when Peti (SOLJA) and I lost to her and Stefan FEGERL. We’re looking forward to the match and the challenge of playing in front of the crowd.” In the upper half of the draw GAUZY and PAVADE defeated top seeds Kristian KARLSSON and Christina KALLBERG of Sweden in the quarterfinals. They will face ROBLES and XIAO in the semifinals. The Spanish duo beat Andre BERTELSMEIER and Mia GRIESEL of Germany in the Round of 16 earlier this morning. “We knew this young pair from Germany is one of the best in the U-19 category. I believe they are ranked second in the World Championship if I’m not mistaken. So we knew it would be tough and although we started the match well they adapted quickly after the first set and things got harder and harder. But we managed to adapt in the last set too ” stated Alvaro. In the next round they beat Ivor BAN and Hana ARAPOVIC of Croatia. “I think the key was the preparation we did before the mixed doubles matches. Our coach Alfredo has been doing an excellent job. We were able to focus on the small details that led to our victory. We’ve played the Swedish pair twice but we’ve never faced the French team ” commented XIAO.
