Historic Gold for MATELOVA and BALAZOVA at the LIEBHERR European Championships
Hana MATELOVA of Czechia and Barbora BALAZOVA of Slovakia clinched their first-ever medal together at the Continental Championships. At the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz MATELOVA and BALAZOVA triumphed over reigning champions Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria and Bernadette SZOCS of Romania. The bronze medals went to Izabela LUPULESKU and Sabina SURJAN of Serbia and Natalia BAJOR of Poland and Tatiana KUKULKOVA of Slovakia. In her third European final BALAZOVA made history by securing Slovakia’s first European title. After losing the mixed doubles finals in 2013 and 2020 she finally claimed victory. For MATELOVA it marked her second European title and a significant win for Czechia having previously won the mixed doubles title in 2013 (ironically against BALAZOVA). The final was intense but the Czech-Slovak pairing always seemed one step ahead. “This was our best match here. Even we were impressed with our performance in the final. We had never won a medal before at the Europeans and we’ve been playing together since 2011 in Herning. For sure the experience of playing finals was on their side. POLCANOVA especially since she knows how to handle the pressure of the final stage having been there three times before ” MATELOVA said. Sometimes experience can also be a burden making it harder to carry. “They were nervous especially in the opening games while we were more relaxed. Before the match we just said ‘Let’s fight and see what happens.’ We stuck to our game plan ” added MATELOVA. BALAZOVA shared her thoughts about her nerves before the match. “Five minutes before the match I told Hana that I was nervous but she calmed me down. Even if we lost we had already achieved a lot by winning a silver medal. So I just wanted to give my best without feeling the pressure of the result. We had a rocky path throughout the entire tournament with a really tough draw. From round one it was challenging. Also we weren’t sure if this would be our last European Championship so we just wanted one medal to say goodbye. But to win gold—it’s unbelievable.” Reflecting on their challenging path MATELOVA added “The first match was the hardest. We faced Charlotte LUTZ and Jia Nan YUAN of France. It couldn’t have been a tougher start but we managed to beat them 3-0. Strangely my defeat in singles helped me focus entirely on doubles and I had plenty of rest between matches allowing me to prepare in peace. Yesterday’s match against Natalia BAJOR and Tatiana KUKULKOVA was also incredibly difficult. They had a 2-0 lead and two match points ” MATELOVA recalled. BALAZOVA also shared a personal anecdote: “After I lost in singles to LUTZ without much of a chance my fiancé told me ‘Maybe it’s for the best because you might become the European champion in doubles.’ That idea stuck in my mind and I thought about it before the final. For me the toughest match was the quarterfinal against BERGSTROM and KALLBERG when we finally secured our medal.” Women’s Doubles final: Sofia POLCANOVA Bernadette SZOCS (Austria Romania) – Hana MATELOVA Barbora BALAZOVA (Czechia Slovakia) 2-3 (7-11 11-7 9-11 11-7 6-11) Semi final Sofia POLCANOVA Bernadette SZOCS (Austria Romania) – Izabela LUPULESKU Sabina SURJAN (Serbia) 3-2 (10-12 11-4 11-5 5-11 11-3) Natalia BAJOR Tatiana KUKULKOVA (Poland Slovakia) – Hana MATELOVA Barbora BALAZOVA (Czechia Slovakia) 2-3 (11-8 11-5 12-14 5-11 11-13)
Brothers Alexis and Felix LEBRUN Crowned Champions in Linz
Brothers Alexis and Felix LEBRUN of France were crowned champions of the Men’s Doubles Event at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz. In the final they overcame Sweden’s Anton KALLBERG and Truls MOREGARD in straight games. Maciej KOLODZIEJCZYK of Austria and Vladislav URSU of Moldova along with Mattias FALCK and Kristian KARLSSON of Sweden took the bronze medals. Felix and Alexis are the first brothers to win a European doubles title. The only other family duo to win a doubles title were the twin sisters Diane and Rosalind ROWE who became world champions in 1951 and 1954. In the final the French duo dominated. “KALLBERG and MOREGARD are amazing players but we played our top game today. Especially Felix who performed superbly. It’s such a great day for me. The first thing this morning was my win against MOREGARD in singles and now our first gold in doubles… I don’t have words to describe it ” said Alexis. Coach Nathanaël MOLIN was also pleased: “Their performance in this doubles tournament is close to perfect. They faced very few difficulties in any match because they have a fantastic game together. Their connection is very strong. Tactically they played perfectly. In this game so much depends on your feeling and sense of what to do at the right moment and today everything clicked.” Speaking about the final against the Swedes MOLIN added: “We knew they have very strong forehands and are good in the short game. They put a lot of pressure on the first ball. The toughest task was finding a way to handle that and we managed it with strong service receive game especially through our own serves.” After the emotional end of his singles tournament where he was disqualified for a reckless reaction Felix bounced back in fantastic style. “I accepted what happened; it was my fault and I moved forward. I spent some time with myself then shifted my mindset and got prepared for the final. This was very important for both of us. Now it’s easier to accept the defeat because this gold heals. We played tactically and technically a perfect match. This morning Alexis played perfectly against Truls in singles which gave us an advantage. We played our best table tennis.” Felix also shared a humorous moment about the end of the match: “We had prepared a special new celebration for this occasion but we were so happy that we forgot to do it. We’re always striving to do new things to change and move forward and that’s why we even changed our celebration ” he said with a smile. Men’s Doubles final: Alexis LEBRUN Felix LEBRUN (France) – Anton KALLBERG Truls MOREGARD (Sweden) 3-0 (11-2 11-6 11-8) Semi final: Alexis LEBRUN Felix LEBRUN (France) – Maciej KOLODZIEJCZYK Vladislav URSU (Austria Moldova) 3-0 (11-5 11-9 11-3) Anton KALLBERG Truls MOREGARD (Sweden) – Mattias FALCK Kristian KARLSSON (Sweden) 3-0 (12-10 11-6 11-2)
Sofia POLCANOVA Defends Her Title in Linz
Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria successfully defended her Women’s Singles title at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz. POLCANOVA retained her crown which she had won two years earlier in Munich. Her doubles partner Bernadette SZOCS of Romania had to settle for the silver medal. Less than two hours after their doubles final loss to MATELOVA and BALAZOVA the two faced each other again this time in the singles final. Bronze medals were awarded to Maria XIAO of Spain and Nina MITTELHAM of Germany. In the singles final POLCANOVA brought tremendous joy to the host nation as the packed TipsArena in Linz cheered her on. “I am very grateful. Winning a medal at the European Championships is hard enough and now I have three again—I can hardly believe it. Since 2018 I’ve won three medals at all three European Championships which is just crazy ” said POLCANOVA. She added: “I really have no words. I am so grateful to my family my husband my mother and of course my dad who gave everything so that I could stand here today. I am thankful for the whole team at the Olympic Center who stand behind me and have helped me so much. The match was very tough and I feel so sorry for Bernie. I would have absolutely wished for Bernadette to win. She is a really good friend. After the doubles match it was so heartbreaking. I cried so much in the locker room and didn’t know how I would manage to play the singles final. I don’t even know how I did it. The third game where I was down 1-7 was definitely the turning point. I was able to turn it around—I don’t know how—but at that moment I knew I could make it.” For SZOCS it was a difficult day. “It is painful that I lost both finals in one day. But as time goes by I will surely realize the value of two silver medals. I am proud of my game but POLCANOVA had her day in the singles. That’s life ” said SZOCS. Sofia POLCANOVA is the third woman in the history of the European Championships who succeeded in retaining the singles title. Eva KOCSIAN won in 1958 and 1960 and Zoja RUDNOVA successfully defended her 1970 title in 1972. 52 years later Sofia is the third one. The much-anticipated rematch of last year’s European Championship final in Munich came slightly earlier than expected. POLCANOVA and MITTELHAM met in the semifinals this time but the outcome was the same with POLCANOVA emerging victorious. In front of a home crowd at the packed TipsArena Sofia showed no mercy yet was fully aware of the magnitude of her achievement. “The first set was very very important. At 2-0 I briefly lost focus and told myself I had to change something I needed to play more aggressively again. And I managed to do that ” said POLCANOVA. SZOCS had been the first player of the day to secure her place in the final overcoming Spain’s Maria XIAO in five games. “I’ve played Maria so many times and on top of that we were in the same club for a while. I knew it was going to be a tough match. We are also friends and during the match I avoided eye contact. It’s so difficult to play against someone you know so well. I came prepared with many tactical options because if you face her with only two or three she’ll see right through it. Also I do my best to avoid putting extra pressure on myself. When I arrived here I said I’d focus only on the next match. I’m trying to enjoy the tournament as much as I can ” said SZOCS. Final Bernadette SZOCS (Romania) – Sofia POLCANOVA (Austria) 1-4 (8-11 3-11 10-12 6-11 9-11) Semi final Bernadette SZOCS (Romania) – Maria XIAO (Spain) 4-1 (11-3 9-11 11-7 11-6 11-6) Sofia POLCANOVA (Austria) – Nina MITTELHAM (Germany) 4-1 (12-10 11-7 10-12 11-4 11-6)
Alexis LEBRUN at the Top of Europe in Singles and Doubles
Alexis LEBRUN clinched the gold medal in the Men’s Singles event at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz. In the final he defeated Benedict DUDA of Germany in straight games. This victory marked LEBRUN’s second title in Linz following his doubles success with his brother Felix. The bronze medalists were Dimitrij OVTCHAROV of Germany and Truls MOREGARD of Sweden. After his win against DUDA Alexis expressed his joy: “I played the best table tennis of my life throughout the whole tournament. I studied DUDA’s matches very thoroughly and prepared for this. It’s unbelievable what I feel now ” said LEBRUN. Dimitrij OVTCHAROV a two-time European champion (2013 in Schwechat and 2015 in Ekaterinburg) silver medalist in singles in 2020 (Warsaw) and bronze medalist from 2007 (Belgrade) could not halt DUDA’s progress to the semifinals. After a breathtaking victory over Felix LEBRUN Benedict DUDA defied the odds and defeated OVTCHAROV in six games. “Yesterday’s match against Felix gave me so much confidence and I already felt good during the warm-up. My movements were smooth and my legs were fast even though I was a bit tired. I’ve never played so well against Dima not even in training. This is also my first official win against him. Dima fights for every ball and it’s hard to break him down. I had to reset after every game from 3-0 as if it was starting all over again. Now I’m in the final and I want to take it a step further. But the next challenge is tough—I’ve recently lost to both Truls and Alexis. I didn’t expect to reach the final especially after being injured for a long time and my international performances and games in the TTBL weren’t great. But I trained really well before the European Championships and just fought my way through round by round ” said DUDA. OVTCHAROV remarked: “Benne played phenomenally—I didn’t think I was playing badly but he was really strong and dominant in the rallies. I couldn’t break through and I became a bit frustrated. I tried to push even harder and started to get more into the game even leading 8-7 in the sixth set. If I had won just one more point there… But he’s the well-deserved winner today. I touched the table with my racket and there was a small dent. I felt like I was hitting that spot on my tomahawk serve. In tennis changing rackets is common practice so I don’t understand why it’s not allowed in table tennis. It’s a strange rule. The disappointment is big because I played very well last night. But that’s sports. I’ve had the privilege of winning this title twice. Still the medal is a nice achievement.” Alexis LEBRUN was in top form in the semifinals rushing into the final stage with a decisive victory over Truls MOREGARD of Sweden. “I am feeling so fresh and full of adrenaline. Despite all the important matches today being in two finals is amazing. I had an unbelievable tournament. I had a dream summer. I played a medal match at the Olympics and now I’m in the European Championships final—it’s fantastic. It’s incomparable. I just play my game and enjoy the finals ” said Alexis. LEBRUN and MOREGARD had met eight times before with the Swede holding the upper hand but today Alexis controlled the match from start to finish. “I entered the match hoping to win 4-0. Of course it’s not always expected especially since our last match was very close. Every time it’s difficult to play against him. Maybe I surprised him because last time my game was not on this level. I tried to be aggressive and very strong in my service receive game—especially the receive because that is most important ” said Alexis LEBRUN. Final Benedikt DUDA (Germany) – Alexis LEBRUN (France) 0-4 (5-11 8-11 6-11 2-11) Semi final Benedikt DUDA (Germany) – Dimitrij OVTCHAROV (Germany) 4-2 (11-8 11-8 11-5 8-11 6-11 11-8) Alexis LEBRUN (France) – Truls MOREGARD (Sweden) 4-0 (12-10 11-5 11-5 11-6)
Top Favorites Face Early Exits at the LIEBHERR European Championships
Germany’s Benedikt DUDA delivered a stunning upset by defeating top seed Felix LEBRUN of France to secure his first-ever singles medal at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz. In another shocking turn of events Alexis LEBRUN took down reigning European champion Dang QIU. In a breathtaking quarterfinal clash Felix LEBRUN held a 3-1 lead and even had a match point but DUDA turned the match around in dramatic fashion. “When I won the match point the emotions surged. It took me a few seconds to realize that I had just secured my first European Championship medal in singles. Felix dominated many games and it wasn’t until the third game that I started to get into it. Coach Lars HIELSCHER told me to stay focused—he would eventually make some easy mistakes and poor decisions. On his match point it was a good decision not to flip to the middle but to his forehand instead. This is my biggest international success. A European Championship is something special because you’re also representing Germany. I’ve always worked hard for this and now I’ve made it. The crowd was amazing; I heard the ‘Duda Duda’ chants and that gave me the final push. Tomorrow I will approach the game the same way as today. Whether it’s against FRANZISKA or OVTCHAROV it will be just as tough as against FELIX. I’ll fight for every point and then we’ll see who represents Germany in the final ” said DUDA. For the 30-year-old left-hander who was runner-up at the 2022 Team World Championships and a two-time European team champion reaching the European Championship semifinals is the greatest individual achievement of his career so far. Unfortunately towards the end of the match FELIX struck the LED boards on the show court resulting in his disqualification from the singles competition. However this will not affect his doubles match tomorrow. “I was emotional. I am aware that it is not good and I won’t do anything similar next year ” said FELIX. “I had the lead many times but he kept coming after me. It was very difficult.” Reigning champion Dang QIU faced an early exit at the hands of Alexis LEBRUN. “It’s an amazing feeling. I beat QIU at the European Games but it’s something special to do it at the European Championships where he was defending his title. I raised my game to the highest level and I’m so happy to be in the semis. DANG’s serve is very difficult to manage so I was under pressure at the beginning of the match ” said LEBRUN. Dimitrij OVTCHAROV achieved an impressive win in the all-German quarterfinal against Patrick FRANZISKA. OVTCHAROV didn’t drop a single game against his World Championship bronze-medal-winning doubles partner from Durban. “That was one of the best matches I’ve played in recent years. I felt like I responded to every strong shot from him with precision and made no mistakes ” said the former world No. 1 and two-time European singles champion. On Sunday OVTCHAROV and DUDA will face off. Truls MOREGARD beat Anton KÄLLBERG in an all-Swedish duel. “This win obviously means a lot. But at the same time it was a tough match to play and win from several perspectives. I’m happy with how I managed to handle the difficult situations. Anton changed his game in an amazing way and won two easy games. Part of his tactic was probably to get me to attack on my own terms. And in those two games I missed a lot of opportunities. Then I started to play better and more tactically smart after it was 2-2. It was good that I dared to do that ” said Truls. In the Round of 16 the biggest upset came when KÄLLBERG defeated No. 5 seed Darko JORGIC of Slovenia in a thrilling seven-game match. Top seed Felix LEBRUN overcame Andre BERTELSMEIER of Germany and No. 2 seed MOREGARD beat Thibault PORET of France. Alexis LEBRUN defeated Milosz REDZIMSKI in straight games and in similar fashion Benedikt DUDA triumphed over Juan PÉREZ of Spain while Dang QIU beat Álvaro ROBLES of Spain. OVTCHAROV overcame Marcos FREITAS of Portugal and FRANZISKA succeeded against Andrej GACINA of Croatia. Quarterfinals Anton KALLBERG (Sweden) – Truls MOREGARD (Sweden) 2-4 (5-11 6-11 11-4 11-3 7-11 15-17) Dimitrij OVTCHAROV (Germany) – Patrick FRANZISKA (Germany) 4-0 (11-3 11-6 11-7 11-8) Dang QIU (Germany) – Alexis LEBRUN (France) (7-11 9-11 8-11 6-11 11-13)
SZOCS won first ever singles medal at the EC POLCANOVA on her way to defend the title
Despite numerous international successes it is only now at the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz that Bernadette SZOCS has secured her first medal in the Singles Event at the European Championships. In the quarterfinals Romania’s star overcame Charlotte LUTZ of France. Reigning champion Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria also secured her place in the semifinals. No. 1 seed Bernadette SZOCS was under pressure tonight in the quarterfinals against Charlotte LUTZ having already played a match against the defensive player Linda BERGSTRÖM of Sweden along with a long doubles semifinal. “It seemed like I had a few too many matches today. I’m tired and it severely affected my movements. I couldn’t move as quickly as I should. I started the day with a really tough match against Linda. However despite the difficulties I’m happy that I stayed calm and found a solution to the challenge. Because of the way I moved I couldn’t rely on my usual tactics so I changed it up and made some variations ” said SZOCS. Commenting on her first singles medal at the European Championships Bernadette said “It’s my first; let’s make it a golden one.” In a re-run of the semifinal match at the 2022 European Championships in Munich (POLCANOVA won in the seventh game at 10-12) reigning champion Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria secured another medal in her match against Germany’s Sabine WINTER. “I know that Sabine has problems with my serve which is an advantage. I also tried to block her forehand because that helps me get into the game better and from the second set onward that worked well. Of course it’s not easy—we are good friends. We were even training together here on Monday joking about the draw saying we would meet in the quarterfinals and hope for a good match. I think that was the case today ” said POLCANOVA. In the all-German clash Nina MITTELHAM dominated and beat Yuan WAN to secure her medal. “A German-German duel is always a bit awkward. I had my tactics and got into the game very well which gave me confidence. Because I know her I played better than in the other matches and found my rhythm. I hope I can keep that up. Before the tournament I had a bit of hope for a medal but I didn’t really know how I would perform without competition practice and without much training. This afternoon I moved the best I’ve moved so far which is actually strange because the tournament has been going on for quite some time now. The last few months have been tough; it wasn’t an easy road so I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished here. I have my boyfriend friends and family behind me who have supported me well and that’s nice. Mentally I was well-prepared for the European Championships knowing that I might not play as well — accepting that is not easy. But with each set it’s getting better and I hope tomorrow I can go to the table feeling fresh and rested ” said MITTELHAM. In a match that looked like a rollercoaster Maria XIAO of Spain beat Jia Nan YUAN of France after seven games. “I had nothing to lose today; she is an amazing player. I focused on my service and receive. She has a fantastic serve and I told myself to think only about the next receive the next two or three balls. It seemed to work ” said XIAO. They had played against each other on a few previous occasions but Maria had not won before. “We met once or twice and I had no chance. I couldn’t receive well enough. This time that was the key and turning point: the good receive. She is one of the favorites so all the pressure was on her ” said Maria who also won her first medal in singles at the European Championships. In the Round of 16 Bernadette SZOCS overcame Linda BERGSTRÖM of Sweden 4-2; Jia Nan YUAN prevailed against Andreea DRAGOMAN of Romania in straight games; Maria XIAO beat Georgina POTA of Hungary; Yuan WAN defeated Jieni SHAO of Portugal 4-1; Sofia POLCANOVA overcame Christina KALLBERG of Sweden 4-0; Nina MITTELHAM prevailed against Fu YU of Portugal 4-2; Sabine WINTER was forced to go the full distance against Elizabeta SAMARA of Romania and prevailed; Charlotte LUTZ overcame Izabela LUPULESKU of Serbia. Quarterfinals Maria XIAO (Spain) – Jia Nan YUAN (France) 4-3 (13-15 11-8 11-13 13-11 3-11 11-7 11-3) Nina MITTELHAM (Germany) – Yuan WAN (Germany) 4-1 (11-6 11-5 9-11 11-7 11-8) Bernadette SZOCS (Romania) – Charlotte LUTZ (France) 4-2 (11-6 7-11 11-5 8-11 12-10 11-9) Sabine WINTER (Germany) – Sofia POLCANOVA (Austria) 1-4 (11-7 8-11 3-11 8-11 10-12)
LEBRUN Brothers Set to Face Swedish Duo in Men’s Doubles Final at 2024 European Championships
The final of the Men’s Doubles Event at the 2024 LIEBHERR European Championships tomorrow promises an exciting clash between Alexis LEBRUN and Felix LEBRUN of France who will take on Sweden’s Mattias FALCK and Kristian KARLSSON. In the semi-final the LEBRUN brothers defeated Maciej KOLODZIEJCZYK of Austria and Vladislav URSU of Moldova. “It was a good match for us. We faced a strong pairing but we managed to play very well and very fast and we are very happy to be in the final ” said Alexis LEBRUN. The French duo left little hope for their opponents. “In doubles the service and receive are the most important and we were very good in that part ” added Felix. Tomorrow they will face Sweden’s MOREGARD and KALLBERG who dominated their compatriots KARLSSON and FALCK in the other semi-final winning 3-0. “They are very strong beating KARLSSON and FALCK 3-0 which speaks volumes. They are two amazing singles players and have already proven their strength in doubles. We will analyze their game tonight and prepare well for the challenge ” said Alexis. Partnering Maciej KOLODZIEJCZYK Vladislav URSU secured Moldova’s first-ever medal at the European Championships. URSU: “We had the same tactics as always but we never really got into the game. They were extremely aggressive and kept us very passive.” KOLODZIEJCZYK:”I said at the press conference that we are a strong doubles team which unfortunately didn’t show in the match. Our opponents were too strong today it was difficult to win the point because they are extremely fast and very confident. You mustn’t forget what we did before I’m happy with the tournament.” The all-Swedish semi-final was a swift victory for MOREGARD and KALLBERG. “We played fantastic table tennis. We followed the plan perfectly both tactically and in executing our shots. It was an amazing match ” Truls MOREGARD said enthusiastically. Anton KALLBERG added “I might be a little surprised that it went so smoothly. When we play this well I know we are incredibly tough to beat. We play with such aggressive intensity that they don’t get a moment to breathe.” Regarding the final against the LEBRUN brothers MOREGARD said: “I’ve never faced them when they are both on the same side so it will be fun and exciting to experience that. I know Anton has faced them in doubles before and won. We’re probably in their heads a little and we have a good chance to beat them tomorrow.” Men’s Doubles Results: Alexis LEBRUN Felix LEBRUN (France) – Maciej KOLODZIEJCZYK Vladislav URSU (Austria Moldova) 3-0 (11-5 11-9 11-3) Anton KALLBERG Truls MOREGARD (Sweden) – Mattias FALCK Kristian KARLSSON (Sweden) 3-0 (12-10 11-6 11-2)
Reigning Champions POLCANOVA and SZOCS to Play for Gold Against BALAZOVA and MATELOVA
In tomorrow’s final of the Women’s Doubles Event at the 2024 LIEBHERR European Championships reigning champions Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria and Bernadette SZOCS of Romania will face Hana MATELOVA of Czechia and Barbora BALAZOVA of Slovakia. “We were leading 10-8 in the opening game and then lost it. If that hadn’t happened it would have been a completely different situation. This way we made it a little more difficult for ourselves. However our win was never in question. Even if I didn’t move well Sofia was there. We know how to support each other. Up until now we have enough experience playing together and we know how to calm each other down and give each other energy ” said SZOCS. POLCANOVA and SZOCS faced a strong challenge in their semifinal match against Izabela LUPULESKU and Sabina SURJAN of Serbia who pushed them to the full distance. The duo of LUPULESKU and SURJAN ended a 21-year drought for women’s table tennis in Serbia. Serbian female players had not appeared on the medal podium since the European Championships in Courmayeur 2003. There was no lack of suspense in the other semifinal match either. Hana MATELOVA and Barbora BALAZOVA were down 2-0 against Natalia BAJOR of Poland and Tatiana KUKULKOVA of Slovakia. They even faced two match balls in the third game before mounting a remarkable comeback to win the match. “We’ve played more than three times against the same pairings and KUKULKOVA and I are teammates so there’s no big mystery about the tactics. We know each other very well. In the first two games they played tactically superbly. We couldn’t find our rhythm and made a lot of easy mistakes ” explained BALAZOVA. However they didn’t give up. “We kept fighting and forced ourselves to stay much calmer even when they had two match balls ” said BALAZOVA. MATELOVA added that the situation wasn’t new to them: “We had a similar match last November against them in Düsseldorf where we were also two games down.” BALAZOVA and MATELOVA finally found their rhythm in the fourth game. “We’ve never won a medal at a major championship and we’ve been playing together since 2011. Our first event together was the European Championships in Herning. We’ve reached the quarterfinals four times including once at the World Championships but we never made it to the medal podium. Maybe this is our last chance and we’re happy we broke the spell ” said MATELOVA. Women’s Doubles Results: Sofia POLCANOVA Bernadette SZOCS (Austria Romania) – Izabela LUPULESKU Sabina SURJAN (Serbia) 3-2 (10-12 11-4 11-5 5-11 11-3) Natalia BAJOR Tatiana KUKULKOVA (Poland Slovakia) – Hana MATELOVA Barbora BALAZOVA (Czechia Slovakia) 2-3 (11-8 11-5 12-14 5-11 11-13)
