At the Opening Ceremony for the World Veteran Championships Jan-Ove WALDNER and Mikael APPELGREN demonstrated their outstanding and quite unique skills in ERICSSON Arena. The World Veteran Championships in Stockholm, after years of careful preparation was officially open.

“The World Veteran Championships was held for the first time ever in 1982, that time in Gothenburg, Sweden”, said Walter RÖNMARK, President of the Swedish Table Tennis Association. “We are very pleased that it is our time once again to organize this event”.

An upbeat Walter RÖNMARK and it was the same response from Hans WESTLING, the Chairman of the World Veterans Committee, one of the creators of the event, he wished the organizers good luck and also hoped that all the participants would have an enjoyable week in Stockholm.

However, the greatest applause during the Opening ceremony was afforded to Jan-Ove WALDNER and Mikael APPELGREN, which although they have both reached veteran age, showed their skills at the table to the crowd’s delight.

In fact Mikael APPELGREN will play in the tournament; he is one of the favourites in the Men’s Over 50 Class.

An incredible 3316 players are ready to complete in what eventually will be some 13,000 matches; 133 table tennis tables are in place in the three halls.
